The Power of Ujjayi Breath in Your Yoga Practice
From the moment I first experienced Ujjayi breath, I knew it was something special. As both a yoga student and teacher, this breath has been a constant companion—grounding me in my practice, deepening my focus, and helping me find ease even in the most challenging moments on and off the mat. Ujjayi breath is more than just a technique; it’s a bridge between movement and stillness, effort and surrender.
What Is Ujjayi Breath?
Ujjayi breath is a controlled, audible breath that involves gently constricting the back of the throat while inhaling and exhaling through the nose. This creates a soft, ocean-like sound, similar to waves rolling onto the shore.
To practice Ujjayi:
1. Find a comfortable seat or start in a gentle movement practice.
2. Inhale deeply through your nose, slightly constricting the back of your throat. Imagine fogging up a mirror, but keep your mouth closed.
3. Exhale slowly through your nose, maintaining the same throat constriction. This should produce a steady, rhythmic sound.
4. Continue this breath cycle, making each inhale and exhale long and smooth.
Why I Love Ujjayi Breath
I’ve always believed that movement is medicine, but it’s breath that truly makes yoga transformational. Ujjayi breath has guided me through moments of resistance, both on the mat and in life. It’s a reminder to soften into intensity, to stay present, and to move with intention. Whether in a dynamic flow or a still meditation, this breath connects me to a deeper sense of calm and clarity.
